Description:
A Glass Lined Chemical Tank (also called glass-lined reactor or glass-lined vessel) is a steel tank whose inner surface is coated with a layer of special chemical-resistant glass. It is widely used in chemical and pharmaceutical industries where high corrosion resistance and product purity are required.
A glass-lined tank consists of:
Outer shell: usually carbon steel (provides mechanical strength)
Inner lining: vitreous enamel (glass fused at high temperature to steel)
The glass layer becomes permanently bonded to the steel through high-temperature firing (around 800–900°C).
Comparison with PTFE / ETFE / PFA lined tanks
Feature | Glass Lined Tank | PTFE/PFA/ETFE Lined Tank |
Corrosion resistance | Very high (acidic) | Very high (broader chemical range) |
Mechanical strength | Moderate | High (depends on metal shell) |
Impact resistance | Low (brittle) | Higher flexibility |
Temperature resistance | ~200–230°C | ~150–260°C (varies by material) |
Repairability | Specialized re-enameling | Lining patch/relining possible |
Cleanliness | Excellent | Excellent |
Applications:
Pharmaceutical API production
Fine chemical synthesis
Agrochemical manufacturing
Dye and pigment production
Intermediate chemical reactions
Acidic storage and mixing processes
