Carbon steel external coil storage tanks are suitable for storing liquid materials that require temperature control but have moderate corrosivity. Typical applications include high-viscosity materials such as heavy oil and asphalt in the petrochemical industry, where coil heating maintains fluidity; edible oils such as palm oil and soybean oil in vegetable oil processing, maintaining a temperature of 40-60℃ to prevent solidification; and organic liquids such as styrene and alcohols in the chemical industry that require constant temperature storage to prevent polymerization or crystallization. For weak acid and weak base media (pH 4-10 range), an internal anti-corrosion coating can be used in conjunction. However, strong acids (such as concentrated sulfuric acid), strong bases (such as liquid alkali), or halogen media (such as chloride solutions) will accelerate the corrosion of carbon steel, and stainless steel or plastic-lined tanks should be selected.
The selection of materials also needs to consider thermal stability. The heating temperature of the external coil is usually no more than 200℃, therefore, heat-sensitive substances (such as certain polymer monomers) require strict control of the heating rate. Easily oxidizable materials require a nitrogen sealing system to isolate oxygen during coil heating. For flammable liquids, the coil design temperature should be at least 20°C below the material's flash point, and anti-static grounding should be installed. In low-temperature storage scenarios (such as liquid carbon dioxide), special insulation structures are required to prevent condensation on the coil surface, which could lead to corrosion. Material viscosity affects heat transfer efficiency; Newtonian fluids (such as diesel fuel) are more suitable for external coil heating than non-Newtonian fluids (such as adhesives). For solid-liquid mixtures, the risk of solid sedimentation must be assessed, and a stirring device should be added if necessary to prevent the coil from being buried and failing.
