The treatment of sediment at the bottom of carbon steel storage tanks requires a systematic strategy combining prevention, monitoring, and removal. Preventive measures include optimizing the feed filtration system to remove solid impurities before material enters the tank; rationally designing the tank bottom structure, using a conical or dished bottom with a drain outlet to facilitate centralized sediment discharge; and controlling storage conditions such as temperature and pH to reduce the possibility of material precipitation. During the operational monitoring phase, regular bottom sampling and analysis are necessary. The thickness of the sediment layer should be assessed using ultrasonic thickness measurement or radiometric detection techniques, and the sediment composition should be predicted based on material properties. For corrosive sediments, the detection frequency should be increased, and the risk of erosion to the tank bottom should be assessed.

Mechanical removal uses physical methods such as rotary scrapers or high-pressure water jets, suitable for hard sediment layers. Chemical cleaning dissolves sediments by injecting solvents or cleaning agents, and the compatibility of the agents with the tank material must be considered. Biological treatment is suitable for organic sediments, utilizing microbial degradation to decompose sludge. All removal operations must be carried out after emptying the tank and purging, and gas detection and explosion-proof equipment must be provided to ensure safety. The treated sediments must be classified and disposed of in accordance with hazardous waste management regulations. Hazardous wastes such as oily sludge should be handed over to professional agencies for treatment. Preventive maintenance plans should be incorporated into the sediment management process, including measures such as regular sludge removal, repair of the inner wall anti-corrosion coating, and optimization of tank cleaning cycles.
