Tower equipment can be classified into which categories according to its operating principle?

Release date:2026-03-10Number of views:1005

Towers can be classified into several main categories based on their operating principles, including distillation towers, absorption towers, extraction towers, reaction towers, and adsorption towers. Distillation towers utilize the differences in volatility of components in a liquid mixture to achieve separation through heating and condensation. In a distillation tower, the liquid mixture is heated to boiling, and the resulting vapor rises within the tower, coming into countercurrent contact with the descending liquid. This repeated partial vaporization and condensation leads to the separation of the components. Distillation towers are widely used in petroleum refining, chemical production, and other fields, and are one of the main pieces of equipment for separating liquid mixtures.

Absorption towers separate gas mixtures through gas-liquid contact. In an absorption tower, a liquid absorbent is sprayed down from the top, coming into countercurrent contact with the rising gas from the bottom. Certain components in the gas are selectively absorbed by the liquid, thus purifying the gas or recovering useful components. Absorption towers are commonly used in waste gas treatment and natural gas desulfurization processes. Extraction towers utilize the density difference between two immiscible liquids to achieve solute transfer through countercurrent contact. In an extraction tower, the heavy and light phases enter from opposite ends of the tower. Through dispersion and aggregation within the tower, the solute transfers from one phase to the other, thus achieving separation. Extraction towers are widely used in the pharmaceutical, food, and chemical industries.

A reaction tower combines a chemical reaction with a mass transfer process, suitable for processes requiring continuous reaction. In a reaction tower, reactants pass through a catalyst bed or packing layer and undergo a chemical reaction under suitable temperature and pressure to produce products. The design of a reaction tower needs to consider reaction kinetics, mass transfer efficiency, and heat transfer to ensure efficient reaction. An adsorption tower utilizes the adsorption of specific components in a gas or liquid by a solid adsorbent to achieve separation. Adsorption towers are commonly used in processes such as gas drying and solvent recovery. Different types of towers, based on their operating principles and process requirements, have specific structures and operating characteristics and are widely used in industrial production.
