Description
A condenser is a heat transfer device used to cool a vapor (gas) into a liquid by removing heat. It’s a core piece of equipment in chemical, power, refrigeration, and HVAC systems.
The shell and tube type condenser,or water-cooled condenser consists of a cylindrical steel shellcontaining a number of straight water tubes, placed horizontally.
The condenser tubes are made either from steel or copper, With or without fins.
The steel tubes without fns are generally used in ammoniarefrigerating systems, because ammonia corrodes the copper tubing.
Thetube sheets are welded to the shell at both the ends. The removablecover boxes are provided to the shell at each end to facilitate the clean-ing of condenser. The intermediate supports are provided in the shell toavoid sagging (i.e. hanging down or bending) of the tubes.
Condenser principle
Hot vapor enters the condenser
Heat is transferred to a cooling medium (water or air)
Vapor loses energy and condenses into liquid
Liquid is collected or sent to the next process
Materials used
Carbon steel (general service)
Stainless steel (corrosion resistance)
Copper alloys (excellent heat transfer)
Titanium (seawater applications)
