The heat exchange efficiency of carbon steel external coil storage tanks is constrained by three factors: the characteristics of the heat transfer medium, structural parameters, and operating conditions. Regarding the heat transfer medium, the heat transfer coefficient of heat transfer oil is 1/3 to 1/2 that of water; steam condensation heat transfer efficiency is 5-10 times higher than that of liquid media; and laminar flow easily forms when the medium flow velocity is below 0.5 m/s, leading to increased thermal resistance. In terms of structural design, excessively dense coil spacing will cause flow field interference, while excessively sparse spacing will reduce the effective heat transfer area; pipe diameter selection needs to balance flow rate and velocity, with DN50-DN80 pipes commonly used; a helix angle of 30°-45° can enhance turbulence but increase pressure drop. The thermal conductivity of carbon steel is approximately 45 W/(m·K), only 1/8 that of copper; a 0.1 mm thick layer of scale on the pipe wall can reduce the overall heat transfer coefficient by 10%.
Under operating conditions, a 10°C increase in the temperature difference between the medium and the pipe wall increases the heat transfer rate by 15%-20%, but excessively high temperatures can lead to localized boiling or thermal decomposition. A 10cP increase in the viscosity of the material inside the tank reduces the convective heat transfer coefficient by approximately 3%. Increasing the agitator speed can disrupt the temperature boundary layer, improving heat exchange efficiency by 30%-50%. Seasonal factors cannot be ignored; low ambient temperatures in winter increase coil heat loss, necessitating increased insulation thickness. As the system ages, increased weld thermal resistance and coating peeling will reduce efficiency; regular chemical cleaning can restore over 90% of initial performance. In terms of control strategy, zoned temperature control saves over 20% more energy than overall heating, and PID control accuracy should reach ±1°C to avoid overshoot losses.
